Masterston - A break from the normality of life

Well, yesterday was different.
I applied for a casual job at the stadium, with an induction next Thursday…
Had a lecture, (well a video of one)
Went for a drink with Dom at the bar, again.
Picked Russ up from Lower Hutt,
Drove us over the Rimitakas in Gail force winds on my way to Masterton.
*Stop* Masterton?Yeah, that’s right I went to the central most important town in the Wairarapa! And what a town it is! Its fantastic and I would sure like to live there.

So now the people from Masterton have probably got bored and stopped reading, (if they can read that is) so I can now give a mores honest perspective. Masterton is not a town for stopping in. It’s a down for driving through when all other roads are closed and you’re being followed by a volcanic eruption. (No ofense Owen mate)
We tried looking for a decent coffee and found the warm milk at Strada, the dirt at mint and the Budget instant coffee mix from Ceciel, (which we awaited 20 mins for).
So failing on the coffee front we decided to go to a Chinese Smorgasbord that Russ had remembered as being “really good.” Well, if one goes for fish as an ingredient into sweet and sour source and enough grease to lubricate Switzerland then its great! (I am told it was a bad day so ill let Russ of for that)
But why then were we in Masterton?
Well, we were there to see Owen and is play “Castlepoint Dreaming” But before we could go to the theatre we met his parents. Which was, as Russ said “interesting” Never heard so many jokes about my old home town of Uckfield. Then at 8pm it was time for the play! Castlepoint Dreaming is a well written and directed play by Owen Winter about your typical straight New Zealander (Jack) trying to make sense of a world outside Masterton. The family bach provides a fitting scene for portraying the changing face of New Zealand. From the uptake of coastal land by the high and mighty City Slickers drinking “house white” from the balcony of their high rise city apartments. To the cultural change between generations that make going to university available even to Mastertonians. It also includes an important point about drink driving that causes the death of Jacks best friend. The script was solid, the jokes were very apt and the acting spot on from what I could tell.
Then we watched a second play about a couple in there 50s who had lost the spark in the marriage. I thought bits of it were very funny, especially with the arguments about dinner as this happens with my parents almost every night. However some of the knighting effects and sound effects were a bit shoddy…
After the performance we went to Owens, (via a police checkpoint and a liquor store) and stayed there till about quarter past one.
After getting briefly lost on our way out of Masterton Russ and I made our way back to the city. I was not a fan of the high winds and rain over the Rimitakas and my driving was not particularly fantastic so I am sure Russ wasn’t a fan either. We got back to Wellington at about quarter to three so I dropped Russ of home and went home, I then realised how hungry I was so went to BK and had a chicken burger with off mayo. This gave me energy so I didn’t go to bed until about 4am.
Also in Yesterdays News: Kurtis sadly wrote off his car. I’m just glad he’s all right but him not having a car could be a bugger all the same.
So this weekend I have my parents coming to see me and my flat, along with my Nan and Mike from England. So that will hopefully be an enjoyable one.

animAL

So….I have neglected my blog recently. But now my flat is completely sorted I can start to feel more normal yay! So lectures started again this week and so far so good. New friends are accumulating which has to be good; I didn’t do all that well last year in that respect really. Not bad, just not as could as I could have. Still haven’t met up with a fair few of my mates last year which is a shame but that should hopefully change once people settle into their new routines. Also, with a new year comes a new nickname: (thanks to Dom “Dominator” D n Alex “who knows” F) “animAL”As in “animal” from the Muppets
